Riesling plays second fiddle to Silvaner in Franconia, yet Horst Sauer tease richness, purity and minerality from this bright, acid driven variety. Franken Riesling is considered to be the most masculine expression of the variety from Germany (in stark contrast to the femininity of the Mosel) yet from the grand cru (GG site) this full bodied, bone dry Riesling is impressive in its structure and concentration.

Horst Sauer Escherndorf am Lumpen 1655 Riesling GG wine is a very cool, very authoritative, very click-click Riesling with a core of lime, peach, hay and maybe a suggestion of fresh nuts around the edges and it’s undoubtedly smart and fine … then comes this incredible ‘swell’, this sense of barely restrained energy, this 'Shove’! It moves the wine to a different place and seems to both increase its scale and slice you in two at the same time. It’s surely the voice of the vineyard. The bright acidity will stand up to Thai or Indian cuisine, or match with roast pork and crackling.

Horst Sauer Escherndorf am Lumpen 1655 Riesling Grosses Gewächs: “Pale lemon-green. Savoury, herbal – sage and perhaps dill lead this – with spicy, lentil notes (again, like Franken Silvaner!) that give intriguing layers on top of the broad, citrus fruit core. Electric acidity brings drive and life through the mid palate – wow! Such drive! Drink 2025 – 2050. 18.5/20.” Tim Jackson MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (17th Sept. 2021)
