What is Mead? Mead is an alcoholic drink of fermented honey and water! However, not all meads are created in the same manner. Known as the drink of the Gods and in modern memory, associated with the Vikings, mead is now also produced using base alcohol, white wine or sugar syrup, with honey added at a later stage.

Jarl is a Scandinavian Chieftain or Noble man.

A suitable name for the force of nature that was Gordon Hannington, founder of the Historical Combat Company and owner of WyldFire. He was a champion and ambassador through our journey as a small business. Following a diagnosis of Testicular cancer in 2017, his post-op treatment was mismanaged and with the possibility of a new diagnosis of skin cancer, Gordon took his own life on 5th April 2019.

During his diagnosis and treatment, the charity CHECKEMLADS were there for Gordon and his family. They are still supporting his widow and were a massive help during the inquest.

Testicular cancer mainly affects men under 30 and is often a subject not talked about. Therefore, we hope by releasing this mead and Gordon’s story, we can raise awareness of this cancer and get men checking themselves on a regular basis. If you notice any changes, then go to your GP and get checked out. Also, as part of your testing, ensure you get a testosterone level check so any post-op issues have a pre-op comparison available. We need to prevent another family going through this trauma.

Gordon loved chillies – the stronger the better! We are not so brave, however. So, Jarl’s mead has chilli flakes added after the fermentation process. This gives it an immediate hit, followed by a nice warming flavour, suitable for anyone who likes a bit of warmth with their alcohol.
