We're huge fans of Malbec at Kwoff, which is probably why we carry so much of it and the 1884 Estate Malbec from Escorihuela Gascón Winery is one of the stand out varieties. This stunning Argentinian wine is harvested from the foot of the Andes in the Mendoza region which is synonymous with the majestic Malbec grape. Typical of Argentinian Malbec, this wine is is an inky dark purple colour with "great legs" in the glass. What we particularly like about the 1884 Malbec is it has all those intense dark plummy and damson flavours you would expect, but it also has a touch of mocha going on that is really pleasant. We also detected a little bit of cinnamon both on the nose and in the taste which was quite unusual but wonderful. It's a flavour profile that totally works for us. As you would expect from a quality Malbec from Mendoza you get big fat juicy grippy tannins and a long lingering aftertaste of more of that plum, damson and dark chocolate. So that just leaves us to give you a food pairing recommendation. Obviously steak and roast beef are going to pair like a match made in heaven, but talking to the guys at Escorihuela, they recommend trying this with roast ham which is a new one on us for Malbec, but we are assured it's a great pairing. Oh, and Rob (Kwoff partner), has insisted we tell you that the 1884 Estate Grown Malbec goes amazingly well with Slattery's dark chocolate that we sell in the shop.
