Clos du Val Merlot

The 2014 Clos Du Val Merlot is at a perfect drinking age right now and it's turned out to be a real triumph.
When you open the bottle and pour into the glass, the colour is an inky garnet hue and a quick swirl reveals a nose that opens to aromas of red fruits, a slight exotic spice and loads of juicy plums. A creamy and complex core of chocolate, spice and purple fruits elevate the palate. The textures are juicy, and vibrant with tannins that are well integrated and perfectly approachable alone or with food. There's a really delicate vanilla on the finish thanks to the deft work in the oaking. It's a perfect special occasion wine when you are having roasted beef, lamb, veal, venison, meat casseroles - in fact, red meat generally!
The Merlot vines at Clos Du Val are between 20 and 29 years old and grow in gravelly, clay loams. Fermentation took place in traditional stainless steel tanks with 2 pump-overs daily. The wine was then transferred to spend 18 months in French oak barrels, 25% of which were brand new.
