Old vine Garnacha from vines in El Real de San Vicente, from sandy, granite soils at 700m.a.s.l.
The grapes for La Suerte come from 5 organic vineyards in the village. The region is Mentrida which skirts the Sierra de Gredos mountains. The vines are 60-80 years old and give very low yields of intense Garnacha fruit. This is a continental climate, with some very hot days – there are usually 2 weeks a year where the temperature reaches 40°C, but in usually cloudless skies the nights get very cold and this extends the growing season. All this allows for some intense and complex flavours to build up in the grapes. Maintaining freshness is the name of the game with this Garnacha. With this in mind, some brave people go out to pick in the middle of the night. The grapes are then cold macerated for 3 days before fermentation. Around 25% of the ferment is whole bunches. The tannin in the stems helps give structure to the thin skins of Garnacha and adds an interesting herbal note. After 3 days spontaneous fermentation is allowed to take place. The juice is in contact with the skins for about 20 days in all, helping to shape a fine, pure tannin profile. Malolactic fermentation takes place in the 300l and 500l old French oak barrels that the wine ages in for 1 year.
This is a Garnacha, a big, spicy one - make no bones about it. However, the freshness is remarkable. Garnacha is high in alcohol like Cabernet has strong tannins, it’s all about balance. Flavour wise this has powerful aromas, quite perfumed floral character with tons of bright red fruit and spice. 18 points Jancis Robinson MW (2016 vintage)
We’d suggest nothing too spicy because Garnacha is already the wine equivalent of a brow mopping Madras. A Cod and Chorizo stew could be exciting… As a serving tip, try to serve it ‘cool’, 20 minutes in the fridge keeps it ‘focused’
