Contrada Trimarchisa is located in Verzella (hamlet of Castiglione di Sicilia). It is a lava crest of volcanic soil with some calcareous sediments that leads to the Alcantara river. The grape varieties used are Nerello Mascalese and a small portion of Nerello Cappuccio. The vines have an average age of around 40 years old.
The grapes for this wine are hand harvested in small crates (to avoid premature crushing) and are quickly transported to the winery where they are sorted. They are destemmed, crushed and put in truncated conical wooden vats where they macerate for 10-12 days at 22-25°C. The macerating grapes are punched down a few times a day. Once the fermentation is complete, the grapes are left to macerate for a few more days until they are finally pressed. The wine is left to age in 25hl barrels and cement tanks for 18 months before being bottled.
The wine is ruby red with touches of violet. It is rich and complex on the nose with hints of bramble, sour cherry and a delicate touch of wood. On the palate it is decidedly complex and very persistent.
