Weingut Högl Riesling Smaragd, Ried Bruck
This product is currently sold out.
Son Georg Högl, father Josef Högl and grandfather Högl, work together on the steep terraced hillsides of Danube River to create outstanding, mineral white wines from the highest and coolest sites in the Wachau.
Focusing on Gruner Veltliner in the selected area of Schon and Riesling in the area of Bruck, their style of winemaking is clean and precise. Having won the Federspiel cup for their 2017 Gruner Veltliner, the equivalent of the World Cup in Austria, the 3 generations of Högl are paving the way for Wachau. Wine making techniques including skin contact, warm ferments and minimal intervention breathe life into these noble grape varieties.
Fruit from one of the steepest and highest vineyards in Wachau (300-470 m), all from slate terraces in what is essentially a cool climate vineyard. Nearly all work has to be done by hand, very mineral like and stoney soil dominated by amphibolites and gneiss.
Pickied from the middle to end of october, then pressed after destemming and a short skin contact of only 5 hours. Fermented with cultured yeast in stainless steel with the fermentation temperature controlled to at least 19°C.
Intense, complex fruit, vineyard peaches, lime, passion fruit, minty flavours, vibrant acidity always fruit carrying, mineralic finish, long persistence, mandarine and lemon in the aftertaste.
Really good with fish and seafood, chicken and of course wiener schnitzel.
