When we were first introduced to Windfall Merlot, Ed from Boutinot Wines told us "this wine is amazing, the vines are grown in between the sea and an apple orchard and you can taste apples and a touch of salt in the wine", and we were like "yeah, whatever...". But then we tried it. This South African Merlot isn't like any other Merlot we've tasted. It has a suggestion of the jammy, big red fruit flavours of merlot, but the Windfall is different. It's reserved and restrained and instead of getting smacked around the tastebuds with an assortment of breakfast jams, this serves up gentle strawberry and plummy flavours that are perched quite nicely behind a glorious apple and blackcurrant main act. We were astounded. But what about the salt I hear you ask? Oh, it's there, but it's ever so gentle, like a lightly salted caramel chocolate bar. It's great, completely unique and we're still trying to work out why it's so cheap. Due to the uniqueness of this wine we've had a real debate on what to recommend you pair it with, but we think we've nailed it. Try it with pepperoni pizza, it should work brilliantly. At the time of writing we hadn't actually tried this pairing yet (give us a chance, we only got the wine in 2 days ago), but as there is a well known pizza chain just six doors down from us, rest assured, we'll be putting this theory to the test in the not so distant future! If you beat us to it, let us know how you get on.
