Wonder Horse Old Vine Palomino (6 Bottle Case Deal)
This product is currently sold out.
On the fecund plateau of Piekenierskloof there exists some extraordinary bush. Dwarfish, seemingly petrified stumps punctuate a high rolling landscape of rye-grass and rooibos. Amongst these are old plantings of Grenache Noir, Chenin Blanc and, here and there, Palomino. Strange Kompanjie has isolated one such block for a teeny release of old vine Palomino, planted in 1977. We’ve been working with this cultivar up here for a few years, blending it judiciously into Tea Leaf, but certain blobs just called for their own spot at the mic so here it is. We made 100x6. Labelled in conjunction with The Old Vine Project to reflect the year this block was planted.
An often innocuous, neutral cultivar, when it’s vines are allowed to get really old it’s yields to drop you can get the personality of this wine. It’s quiet on the nose and palate but persistent with notes almond skin, fennel and even a little jasmine, all this follows on the palate with a bright natural acidity and a teasing top note of grassy fennel and almond nuttiness. Drink it slowly to take all this in.
Great with simply cooked fish dishes, scallops or fishcakes or an asparagus and lemon risotto.
