Owners Stephan and Izelle van de Merwe have proudly named their two Grand Cuvee wines after their daughters, Simoné and Richelle. Both wines are key to the winery's philosophy of 'Elegance in wine' and this white Bordeaux varietal blend is a mountain powerhouse to be savoured.
This white blend showcase the unique terroir of the Banghoek Valley, Stellenbosch. Elevation is 300-500masl and the vines are mostly southerly facing. This provides moderate temperatures resulting in late but slow ripening fruit. The soils are made up of leached, decomposed granite and sandstone. Gravel in the upper layers provides for good drainage in wet seasons and clay in the subsoil provides moisture retention in dry ones. The steep vineyards are trained on a 7 wire hedge and cane pruned by hand. Average yield is 8-10tonnes/ha. Grapes were harvested by hand pressed directly into 500L French oak barrels. Fermentation commenced spontaneously. The leese was frequently stirred up during barrel aging. Blending took place after 9 months, after which the composed blend was aged in tank for another 4 months. The wine was bottled after a total of 13 months.
A four square blend of mountain Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Aging in new French oak provides an abundance of vanilla creamy oakiness balanced with the naturally waxy fruit. A bold wine on the palate the oak nicely marries with the lengthy more-ish zesty acidity and tang. A serious drop with serious intent.
Great matched with wild mushroom risotto, richly sauced seafood dishes.
