Catalina Sounds Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

We recently had the pleasure of attending a large Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc wine tasting which is where we first came across Catalina Sounds Sauvignon Blanc. The event was proving there is more to Marlborough than Cloudy Bay and boy oh boy, there certainly is. Catalina Sounds was the star of the show for us. Less grassy and more tropical fruits than many of the others on show, this Marlborough Sauv Blanc showed that a little touch of oak can elevate this brilliant grape and region to new heights. The colour is pale straw and the aromas are of gooseberry with stonefruits, citrus and tropical fruit elements, with crushed sweet herbs and floral notes in support. This wine really delivers on taste. Soft and approachable, with citrus and white stonefruit interwoven with tropical fruits and herbal notes. A use of oak on just a small proportion of this wine adds texture and nuance. We've had a bit of a debate at Kwoff about what to best pair this wine with. In the end we all agreed summer salads and grilled vegetables, but a few of us also think it would be a fantastic pairing for asian cuisine, particularly stir-fry's.
