800m as the crow flies from Château Petrus, Chateau Canon Chaigneau sits at the highest point of the plateau. They have exceptionally deep soils, running down to the water table. This means drainage is also optimal; water doesn’t ever stagnate nor overbear vine roots which are free explore the terroir below to their full potential!
It’s worth noting that vines are very much like icebergs - what you see on top is a very small percentage of the whole plant. They generally grow around one metre per year below the surface. The vines are on average 35 years old so there are a lot of roots down there absorbing even more of the flavour profiles of the fabulous terroir. As Decanter
says, the area is "... the extension of the Pomerol plateau, and the majority of the best Lalande wines are found in this part of the appellation.
Thierry Garnaud, retired as Maitre de Chai from Cheval Blanc in 2019, after 38 vintages and alongside new owner Romik Arconian wanted to try their hand at something different, something more modern, purer & without oak.
Chateau Canon Chaigneau Cuvee 8a wine is lovingly crafted from specific parcels of slightly younger vines, vinified & matured solely in concrete cuves. 2019 is the first vintage of this ground-breaking wine. It displays notes of blueberries, pepper and black olives on the nose, a very smooth mouthfeel with notes red fruit, expresso, almonds & dark chocolate.
