The monastery at Kloster Eberbach (Rheingau) was established by Cistercian monks from Burgundy in 1136, bringing with them vines, expertise and laying the foundation for Pinot Noir production in Germany. Today the estate, managed by Dieter Greiner covers 200 hectares (150ha Riesling / 30ha Pinot Noir) and as a founding member of the VDP (Germany's finest estates) it’s acclaimed by journalists worldwide!
Kloster Eberbach ‘Crescentia’ Höllenberg Spätburgunder Dry wine is a sublime Burgundian-style Pinot Noir from Assmannshausen, where this grape has been cultivated since the early 16th century. 'Hollenberg' derives from the old German word meaning 'heap' or 'precipice'. This steep vineyard is almost entirely violet-coloured slate and stone - similar to that found in the Steinberg vineyard. Ripe, wild, red berry fruit with lightly spicy notes. The palate has redcurrant, bramble and red cherry fruit, and refreshing juicy acidity balancing the fine tannins. Lovely with braised meats or venison.
