Wiese & Krohn was founded in 1865 by two Norwegians - Theodor Wiese and Dankert Krohn - shipping initially to Scandinavia and Germany. In the century and a half since its foundation, Krohn has built up an outstanding reputation. Long renowned for the quality of their sublime Colheitas (single vintage tawnies), they produce a remarkably complete range for a small house, and each wine excels in its category. Much of the secret lies in the high quality of their vineyards - the magical combination of terroir, locality, aspect, incline and low-yielding vines.
The winter and spring of 2005 were dry so flowering was good. The summer was hot so some vines suffered from the drought but showers in September allowed the grapes to mature and cool nights ensured some balancing acidity. Average yield of uneven quality but some excellent ports for early drinking. The result is an approachable, concentrated and intensely fruity vintage Port.
Fermentation in open granite tanks called 'lagares', where the grapes are trodden by foot. Fermentation is interrupted by the addition of grape spirit to preserve a certain degree of natural sweetness. All ageing is done in 547 litre oak barrels (the traditional 'pipe') and larger casks. Bottled 2 years after the vintage and in order to maintain richness and power they are neither fined nor filtered, therefore throwing a large amount of sediment as they mature in bottle.
Krohn Vintage 2005 port is exceptionally ripe, mouth-filling fruit, characteristic of the hot vintage with deliciously spicy Christmas cake notes, this is soft, forward and approachable, a great follow-on to the 2003 and excellent value for money. Decant and serve with well-matured farmhouse cheeses.
