Peter Lehmann established his namesake winery in 1979, driven in large part by a desire to support Barossa growers during a crippling grape oversupply at the time. The wine from the first vintage in 1980 was called ‘The Futures’ in a nod to the commitment Peter made to paying the growers once he had sold the wine. This arrangement was sealed with a handshake and Peter’s word was his bond. True to his promise, when the money started coming in, Peter made sure to pay his growers first.
Sourced solely from Ben Zander’s “Wroxton” Vineyard, situated at 500m asl from 20-30 year old vines. This vineyard has all the hallmarks of a classic Eden Valley Riesling site – high altitude, shaly, schisty soil and adequate canopy ensuring the fruit remains in optimum condition throughout ripening. The grapes were picked early and cold fermented in stainless steel tanks. Following a two week fermentation period, the wine was clarified and bottled immediately before being cellared at the winery for five years prior to release. Drink now or cellar until 2038.
Early picking has produced a fresh, lively Riesling with a delicate green tinge and hints of freshly picked limes with just a touch of toast in the background. Fine, linear, alive on the palate with breadth of citrus oil, tang and quickening acidity, minerals and poise. This wine will cellar for many years to come. Pair with Pan fried, freshly caught King George Whiting matched with crunchy home-cut potato chips, a match made in heaven! Don’t forget the lemon!
